No Cancelation- #BigOrangeScrew Once Again

Yes, that is an actual image of the bridge on campus not salted, not cleared off, and a dinky yellow sign that says caution wet floor. This was an image passed around on the #bigorangescrew hashftage on the 18th of this month during the terrible conditions that had forced many students, faculty, and other staff to stay home.

If you don’t remember, last year in January and February, there was a great deal of snow and the administration did a poor job of handling the situation. It is not uncommon for the University of Tennessee in Knoxville to not close the school despite the harsh weather conditions. Granted how the state and local government responds to the issue is another matter. This post will be focusing on how the University has handled it.

Now the Knox News Sentienal, a local newspaper, brings out this article as the University’s official reason as to why it doesn’t close. I started choking as I started to read it.

tumblr_mv1cukP74R1saqvcqo2_500

Here is the reason why I think that. When I was looking at @UTKnoxville’s twitter account I noticed they shared this.

You can see why I can bull on the whole story that they don’t close because of an incident that is over 50 years old.

#CheckerNeyland

While I won’t be at the game this Saturday due to lack of funds, I will be watching the game against Florida on TV.

Normally Tennessee Fans would just dress up in orange and white and you would see a blend of the colors throughout the stadium.  For this game though, UT has something big in mind.

They want to #CheckerNeyland and they will need every Tennessee Vol that is going to do their part. I hope they are able to accomplish it, it won’t be an easy task. That is why I am blogging about it. To help bring awareness to this awesome idea.

For those that don’t know at the end of the goal posts in the stadium, they are checkered orange and white, inspired by the checkered pattern in Ayres Hall Tower design.

Make sure to wear the right color for the game this Saturday! Go over to this site. All you have to do is put in your section, row, and seat number. You will than be told what color to wear.

While I am watching the game on TV, I will be wearing orange and white and I hope to see the stadium checkered in orange and white.

Sexual Assaults at UT

At the University of Tennessee within a month there were 5 sexual assaults reported all by young women. Knowing the statistics though, the number of sexual assaults that have occurred on a college campus no doubt double that number.

This year the UT Police Department are obligated to send an email out to all the students, faculty, and staff every time a sexual assault is reported to them. The students identity have been kept a secret and none of the young women have chosen to file charges. Out of the 5 that occurred, only 1 of them was by a stranger and that was when that person was going out for a run.

There are three things about this whole situation that have bothered me.

3.) Students reactions to the reports

On anonymous social media apps like Yik Yak, students revealed their true thoughts on the issue. Many blamed the victim. Others made a joke out of it or thought they were simply lying (hence why they aren’t pressing charges).

reminder about rape  lying about rape

Whether it is groping, rape, or another other form of sexual assault, it isn’t funny. Stop joking about it. You are not only making light of the matter, you are empowering and encouraging those committing these horrid actions and you are being disrespectful and hurtful toward the victims.

people saying shit trying to be funny

Thankfully there were a few that said this shit needed to stop.

what is wrong with you be responsible

2.) Not one of them have want to file charges against the individual.

I understand why, one of them probably thought that finding the individual would have been unlikely.

Consent-13

As for the other young women that knew their assailant, I’m not surprised they didn’t file charges. You don’t feel people would believe you no matter what you do, people will look down on you because of what happened, and people will say that you shouldn’t have put yourself in that situation and question why did you trust him.

They wouldn’t say or lay any of the blame on the one who hurt you, they would just focus all that blame on you instead.

So before anyone out there lays all the blame on the victim check yourself and stop judging.

1.) It’s happening.

The fact that its happeing. The fact that there are students on campus going through this, is terrible. No one should have to go through this.

While I am glad that more awareness is being brought to this problem, it is sad that it still exists. It is sad that young women are afraid to file charges and its sad that sexual assailants get away unscared.

What a Month

10303957_10202631918108421_1238042082744913046_n

This past months things have been topsy turvy. It started a week after classes started at the University of Tennessee.

My boyfriend got laid off, another relative is now living with us due to some awkward circumstances, I lost some financial aid, I got a kidney infection, and my dog is dying. There is a lot more, but since it mostly involves family, I’m respecting their wishes and not going into the details of it all on here.

Despite all this, only now is it all starting to bother me a little bit.

Two weeks ago I went to see my therapist and I told him everything that was going on (minus Kidney Infection- that was from this past week) and he says I was handling things amazingly well.

As I told my therapist,  Pre-medicine and pre-therapy I would have been “a puddle on the floor.” I have cried a couple of times, but I can actually live my life and not be trapped in the wall of anxiety and depression.

Even though I have been doing well, I am starting to feel it get to me. It is also one of the reasons why I have been away from writing. From writing in my journals to writing on my blog. A lot has been happening in my life.

My boyfriend is amazed at all that is happening. Between my family issues, my finical issues, my families financial issues, my families family issues, and me being in college he is impressed at how well I am handling it.

A lot is going on, just thinking abut it is making my head spin.

I hope you all are doing well.

My Choice to Live at Home Over the Dorm

unnamed

My Old Dorm Room

Last year I had a wonderful chance to live in 1436 with a wonderful roommate. I lived in the “Penthouse” of Morrill Hall with (mostly) other transfer students. I had a great RA, a less than great cafeteria, and out of the 3 elevators one of them would usually get stuck once a week.

Even though I’m glad to be living off campus this year, I will surely miss it.

I had a wonderful experience living on campus last year with an awesome roommate. I have also had terrible experiences of living with other people.

That is not the reason why I am not living on campus.

Not gonna lie to you, I was concerned about the idea of going from an awesome roommate to a horrible one. While that scared me, I still wanted to live on campus. It would have been convenient and easier that way.

Why am I living at home than?

Money.

It costs about $4,500 to live in a dorm and that is not including the required meal plan, which adds about $1,500 more (and that’s the lowest one too). That would make it a total of roughly $10,000-$11,000 each semester.

Thanks, but no thanks.

It won’t be easy, for one thing I don’t have a car. As a result my boyfriend will have to drive me to school everyday. I will have to make sure I have everything with me before I head to campus. Not to mention I can’t carry as much with me.

I do miss being able to just leave my dorm room, head on down to campus to all the various activities. I miss being able to sleep till an hour before class so I can just crawl out of bed, throw some clothes and makeup on, brush my teeth, grab my bags and head out to the door for class. I miss having constant access to a gym, and “free” activities on campus.

At the same time though, I love being able to go to a fridge and find it filled with food and not have to leave the building to get food. I enjoy not having to deal with lousy hall-mates who come back drunk from partying at night. I can still focus on sleeping and doing my homework without feeling pressured to socialize with my roommates or hall-mates (not that I mind, but studying comes first). I can still go the gym the time I am on campus and take advantage of the free fitness classes they offer for students.

Will I miss living on campus? Of course. Do I regret my decision to not live on campus?

Not one bit.

What the Westboro Baptist Church Taught Me

filled with hate I  don’t remember when I first heard of the Westboro Baptist Church, but I do remember my reaction. I was angry. I wanted to get in their faces and I wanted to yell at them, “Who did they think they were? God himself??!!” Now, many years later since I first heard of the Westboro Baptist Church my feelings have somewhat changed. With Fred Phelps recent death I can’t help but think of the Westboro Baptist Church and its legacy of hate filled mantras, colorful signs filled with nonsense as they picket at funerals- hurting the families and friends of the deceased. After seeing their actions they have taught me something. Thou Shall Not Hate. Of course that seems really obvious, but think about it. Is there someone you don’t like? Is there someone who treated you in an awful manner that even the thought of them brings hatred out in you? Exactly. Hate is an easy emotion to succumb to and a hard emotion to conquer. I remember when there was word that they were going to picket a soldiers funeral about a year or 2 ago. . A facebook event was soon made and I knew I had to go. I didn’t care if I missed class or not, for me this was important.  I soon made a sign and I realized and knew that if I spouted any words of hate I would be just as much of an hypocrite as Fred Phelps and his whole community.

My Sign at the Counter Protest

I decided to put these words on the sign because this can apply to everyone. Those that have just lost loved ones. Those that are at the counter protests and any of the Westboro Baptist members. I went to the counter protest and we got there real early, early enough to attend another persons funeral. Many people had american flags, gay pride flags, signs that said Peace and Love. I loved seeing bible verses, verses from the Torah and the Koran. There were quotes from Buddha also. It was wonderful to see a diverse group of people come together to show their support to a grieving family. There were also (of course) people with their signs saying that the Westboro Baptists should go to Hell (which it is understandable, but still it’s not right), and others that treated this whole thing as a joke. These people even though it was good (somewhat) that they were there, they obviously didn’t understand the full purpose of this counter protest. While waiting we the counter protesters were invited by the family who was threatened to be protest invited us closer to the funeral home. I of course was all for it. Holding my sign for the family and friends. They were the ones who were suffering, they needed comfort. The focus shouldn’t be about countering hate with hate, but giving love to those who are being hated on and yes be loving to those filled with hate. I remember at one point while facing the street away from the funeral home that a group of people in a car actually flipped me off and told me to go to hell. I was shocked and I still think they were either supporters of the Westboro’s or they were “scouts” trying to see whether or not it would be worth to come out and protest the funeral. Either way I have learned within my heart that the only way to counteract hate is with love. It is really easy to give in to the emotion of hate, but that is not the answer. They taught me to love and how to love, even in the face of hatred itself. Thank you Westboro Baptist Church,  you taught me how not to act. You taught me that hatred is wrong. You taught me why compassion is important. the most important lesson you taught me  is how to love you and love all those filled with hate. It is not an easy task, it never is, but I will do my best. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My Valentine’s Day 2014

2-26-2014 125

Valentine’s Day wasn’t a a huge ordeal this year. I was really excited for where Chris was going to take me, but honestly for most if the day I kept thinking of one thing, I needed to get his gift done.

I decided to make him for Valentine’s Day this year 52 reason why I love him. While I know I can’t narrow the reasons down to that number, I decided to try anyway. I won’t lie it was hard. It took me hours staring at the computer trying to figure out what words to say. Trying to describe why you love someone is hard, especially since there are so many reasons, and for me loving Christopher comes as easy and natural as breathing. Can be difficult at times when you are upset with each other, but it’s like exercise- those muscles are getting stronger and so is the relationship.

It took me I want to say about 4-5 hours to finish the whole thing. It took me a while. All the paper and gluing I had to do. I was very glad I had told Chris that I we should have dinner later at 10, because originally we were thinking about having dinner at 7:30 and I only finished his gift a little after 7:30.

52 Reasons Why I Love You!

2-26-2014 055

On the left is the box the deck of cards came from and on the right is the end result of this project. I don’t think the cards would have fit in there. I used a lot of paper.

After that I sped through getting ready. I was originally going to curl my hair, but I was too impatient and I decided to just try to give it volume instead.  I called Chris to let him know I was on my way. I was very excited to see where he was going to take me. I don’t know why I was really excited for this Valentine’s Day, I knew we weren’t going to be doing a lot. I think it was because I was excited to just spend time with him and I wanted to see what he thought of his gift.

After I got my makeup on, which took less time than I suspected, I kept pacing back and forth. Bothered my roomate and hallmates until Chris texted me to let me know he was here. I was freaking out.

When he finally arrives I head down to meet him (guests are not allowed into the dorm unaccompanied) and I see him there and he is so surprised by what I was wearing, very different from what I usually wear, but I loved the outfit and I was rocking it. I got lots of compliments and stares that night.

When we arrived to dinner I was genuinely surprised to find out that we were eating at Copper Cellar! I was really excited I hadn’t eaten at this restaurant since I was 12! I loved the food and it felt so fancy! Now I was nervous because we were an our early, so I didn’t know what we were going to do. Well it turns out that a lot of people didn’t show up for their reservations (sometimes people book multiple restaurants ahead of time and than give their date more options as to where they want to go, but they never cancel the other bookings. We were able to as a result get in a hour early! I was very happy.

rest_logo_coppercellar

When it came time to giving gifts, I insisted Chris open his gift first. I couldn’t wait to see his reaction. He was confused and shocked at first. I explained to him what it was and he loved it. I was so happy that he loved his gift. I had also bought chocolate and a starter Theros deck ( he is into Magic the Gathering), but he said his favorite gift was the deck of cards I made for him.

2-26-2014 078

Looking at the cards I made for him. 😀

Now when he handed me his gift I was nervous, he said that it wasn’t a ring so I shouldn’t worry (which I was very glad for I am not ready for that yet). Well, when I opened the book I was shocked. He gave me real emerald earrings. They were beautiful. I was speechless. He even laughed from how speechless I was. I’m honestly surprised I didn’t cry because it was an amazing gift and I was amazed that he bought it for me. I knew it must have cost a lot. Chris at one point said with my reaction everyone would have thought he proposed. Man, my reaction when he proposes, I will probably cry, freak out, and be dumbfounded all in one. Anyway.

2-26-2014 115

I was genuinely shocked.

The Emerald Earrings

The rest of dinner was great I had , delicious wine, crab cakes mashed potatoes, and Cesar salad. I was stuffed. We just spent time together and it was wonderful. After dinner was over we drove around, did some shopping, and went home and cuddled while watching The Golden Age of Sinbad.

2-26-2014 124

It was a wonderful Valentine’s Day. I believe this is on par with our first Valentine’s Day (part 2- I will explain the story in another post later). How was your Valentine’s Day? What has been your best Valentine’s Day? Let me know in the comments.

Superbowl 2014

My mom made some excellent food for the superbowl and I must say I really enjoyed it. We really didn’t do much preparation wise. I did dress in Broncos colors for that was the team I decided to root for for the day.

Here are some pictures that mom & I took of the food mom made and the decorations that she put together:

  • Another foul on the Seahawks!
  • Dreamworks? I hope not another car commercial.  Need for Speed? Wasn’t that a movie already?

  • That was way to close Broncos!
  • Yummy Chicken wings that my mom made.
  • A Challenge Flag is thrown, I challenge you!!!

TV Show Review: Doctor Who Christmas Special

Image

Doctor Who

Episode: 103 (Christmas Special)  The Time of the Doctor

Writer: Steven Moffat

Director: Jamie Payne

Producer: Marcus Wilson

———————————————————

Goodnight Raggedy Man.

Last nights Doctor Who Christmas Special left me with heartbreaks and tears for sure.

Matt Smith was my first Doctor for me and though Nine is my favorite, I have been told you never forget your first Doctor and I don’t think I will ever be able to forget him.

I don’t have BBC America and neither do my friends, so we all went to Green’s Tavern which was open on Christmas Day and having a special showing of Doctor Who. My Boyfriend and I arrived at Green’s around 7:30. I thought this ridiculously early myself, but I was proven wrong when seats were already filling up around 8:00. So for about an hour with some new friends and old friends we played Cards Against Humanity.

It eventually became too loud to play so we just watched the behind the scenes footage of Doctor Who all the while reading the subtitles, yah for subtitles!

Soon we were watching the show. Now because it is Moffat I will talk about what stuck out to me rather what I liked and didn’t like.

image

~My Immediate Thoughts While Watching:

  • OH MY GOD! We have had Daleks, Cybermen, Silence, and Weeping Angels all in a span of 15 minutes. What the hell Moffat?!
  • I would hate to live in the Town of Christmas, I would have no friends.
  • The Crack is Back.
    Image
  • What the…Don’t do this to Clara! Idiot.
  • The Tardis has been gone for 300 years and you have been okay with that? I freak out when I can’t find my phone after 5 minutes.
  • What I’m having feels for Handles. I’m having feels for a Cybermen’s head?!?!!? OMG! I can’t- I can’t handle this.

This was the image I had when I began crying over a Cybermans head

  • Wait what, I’m confused.
  • We are going to see the New Doct- wait its young Matt Smith again.
  • Oh great so I have to see young Matt Smith only to see him regenerate.
  • He just asked to fly the TARDIS?!? Oh God.
  • WHAT THATS THE END OF THE SHOW?!?

Honestly after the episode my brain froze than crashed like my old dell computer.

All the questions I have:

  • What about him dying on Trenzalore? Does that mean he will be coming back here?
  • Were all the silence on that ship? if so were they all inhabited by the Daleks? How is that even possible?
  • How did the Doctor remember the silence were confessional priests?
  • When were the silence inhabited by Daleks, before Clara saw them the first time or after?
  • Where did The Doctor get Handles?
  • What happened to the little boy who was guarding the TARDIS? I hope he didn’t die, but I got that impression.
  • How many new regenerations does The Doctor now have?

I overall thought it was a great Christmas Special. It wasn’t my favorite Christmas special, but I enjoyed it immensely. Between crying over Handles, seeing Amy Pond again, and of course The Doctor regeneration I’m definitely feeling emotionally drained.

I’m still processing it, so I may be posting more about this episode later on. For now though I give it 3.5 stars out of 5. 3.5 star

Hope all of you had a Great Christmas.

Happy Boxing Day and Happy St. Stephen’s Day!
