Book Review: The Beast Within

the beast within

I grew up loving Beauty and the Beast. I have read many different versions of the tale. I have read modern adaptations and I have read different cultural adaptations. I will be talking about the book in length, so there will be spoilers.

Having Read Fairest of All, and having enjoyed it a lot, I had high hopes for The Beast Within. I was disappointed. At times it felt like I was reading bad fanfiction(and I like fanfiction, there is a lot of good fanfiction out there). Page 22 is a good example of what I am talking about.

There was a character by the name of Tulip Morningstar, that made my eyes roll. Tulip Morningstar? That was the best name the author could come up with? She was supposed to be the name for one of the love interests that the Beast meets before he meets Belle. Really? It sounded so stupid, I couldn’t take it seriously.

Circe being the witch/enchantress, a pig farmer’s daughter, and having three sisters (making me think of Macbeth) was another Wtf moment.

5 Fandoms that Made Me Who I Am Today

It is really hard for me to say when I became a fangirl. I think because of the family I grew up in I was born to be a nerd and geek. With my father he love of science, star trek, science fiction books, comic books, etc. My mother love crafts, phantom of the opera, romance books, books in general, and when she become obsessed with it, she sucked the life out of that obsession until she sucked the life out of it and than moves onto the next fandom.

I was born to be a fangirl.

I had to think for a long time about this. I was wracking my brain, trying to go through the mess I call my memories to figure out what began my way to being a fangirl.

What were the 5 fandoms that started it all?

1.) American Revolution History & 1776

I know everyone is probably looking like this the image below, but hear me out.

The reason why I have this at number one is because between the Musical 1776 that I remember watching when I was a little girl in Rhode Island, learning about American Revolutionary history during my trips to Boston, and just growing up in a household that encouraged learning- I was hooked to this aspect of history. Practically every time in history class when we got around to this topic I was excited. I still remember the huge paper diagram we did in my 5th grade class of the “Road to Revolution.”

Wish I had a picture of it, it was awesome.

I know the musical is inaccurate and I know that not all aspects of the American Revolution are things to aspire to, but the history is something I have always geeked out about. This helped develop my love of backstory, connecting past, present, and future. It also helped appreciate the history of my country.

2.) Fairy Tales & Disney

I tried to take a picture of my moms book, but it kept turning out terribly (I think there is something up with my camera) , so I borrowed another persons and linked it in the photo credit.

Fairy Tales and Disney for me went hand in hand when I was younger. For Halloween I have been Aurora, Jasmine, and Belle (twice).  I loved Disney and Fairy Tales. As I got older I fell in love with the book my mom had, The World’s Best Fairy Tales (Readers Digest Anthology).  It had beautiful illustrations in it and different fairy tales in it. That is when I learned of that Disney had changed some of these tales, which seeing how The Little Mermaid originally ended. I’m okay with the new ending.

Thanks to fairy tales, I am okay with the fantastical and different.

3.) Scooby-Doo

I didn’t Cartoon Network when I was younger so I was unable to watch Scooby-Doo, but I was able to read the Scooby-Doo comics. My dad would go to the comic book store all the time, I even went with him sometimes. I don’t remember how I started getting the Scooby-Doo comic books, but once I started getting them, I haven’t stopped reading comics since. I don’t read the Scooby-Doo Comics anymroe, not because I don’t like them, but because I have expanded my comic book reading and I want to go beyond the meddling kids ending (even though that phrase still brings me a smile). It was all because of Scooby-Doo comics I began reading about Batman, Superman, X-Men, Thor, and various other comics I now read.

4.) Babylon 5

The Babylon Project was our last, best hope for peace. A self-contained world five miles long, located in neutral territory. A place of commerce and diplomacy for a quarter of a million humans and aliens. A shining beacon in space, all alone in the night. It was the dawn of the Third Age of Mankind…the year the Great War came upon us all. This is the story of the last of the Babylon stations. The year is 2259. The name of the place is Babylon 5.

I still geekgagasm whenever I hear these words. Since this series first came out when I was too young to understand, I wasn’t able to appreciate it as much. Yes, I would watch a few episodes with my parents and I really enjoyed the story. It helped cultivate my love for sci-fi, fantasy, and space. Later on as I got older I began watching the full series on DVD and I became hooked. Although I was sad and disappointed by the last season, it was still good and it still has left its mark on my geek heart.

5.) Harry Potter

The Book that finally helped me confirm who and what I was- a geek. Believe it or not, it took me three times to read the first chapter before I could get into it. It just felt a little slow for me at first. I finally got into though and once I did, look out.

I didn’t know another geek like me out there (among people I knew, not on the internet). I was on Mugglenet, HP Lexicon, The Leaky Cauldron, Potter Talk, HP Companion, and JK Rowlings website. I began reading HP fanfiction while waiting for the next book to come out. I found a whole new world where others geeked out like me, loved the back story, analyzed all the details and tried to figure out what happens next.

Although I was also disappointed with the ending of this book and series, I still love it and it still has a place in my heart.

For me, even though I may no longer obsess some of these fandoms as hard as I did back in the day, they still have a place in the heart.

my 5 fav disney songs

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love Disney songs. If I watched a Disney movie and there wasn’t at least one song in their it wasn’t Disney. To me any animated movie with music was Disney. I know that is not the case now, but that is what I thought when I was 5 till I was 12.

the more you know

As I got older my taste in Disney music has changed. My favorite Disney Songs will include those that didn’t make the original cut.

As of 2014 here are my 5 Favorite Disney Songs:

#5.) I Can Go the Distance

As I got older I kept dealing with depression and anxiety. Part of that resulted in feeling like a failure and how my life was going at time.

Listening to this song has helped me feel better.

#4.) God Help the Outcasts

I thought this song was pretty when I was little, but when I heard it once again 4 years ago, I began crying. It touched me and really hit a chord. I can’t explain it, i wish I could.

#3.) I See the Lights

I just really enjoy this song and it makes me think of me and my boyfriend.

#2.) Let It Go
let it go again

I have written so many times about Frozen. For me I connect with this song because of my anxiety and depression. Letting go is one of the hardest things for me. I still remember when I first heard this song I cried. It took me a bit to realize why I cried, but I eventually realized.

#1.)  If I Never Knew You

This was really hard for me to choose for the number one spot. It was between this and my #2.

I chose this song for the main reason is that it made me love this story so much more. It wasn’t in the original release of the movie, but during the 10th anniversary edition they put the scene back in. This scene, this song helped me love this movie and these two as a couple.

I enjoyed them before but I had a hard time seeing the relationship grow (granted its only one movie) and with this song it portrayed emotion, depth, and love that helped convince me. To me before this song the romance felt forced.

I just can’t put into words how this song makes me feel.

Answering Your Questions: Why Let Elsa Live?

Here is a question a reader sent to me via email:

“I was quite taken by your interpretation of Frozen suggesting that Elsa’s gloves are magical.  It does seem reasonable to me that the trolls had several pairs for her, especially if the teal pair was of a stronger magic that could better contain her powers.
Something has bothered me for quite some time about Elsa’s interaction with Hans.  Why did he not let he guard kill her when she was battling the guards?  She was clearly vulnerable and almost certainly would have been struck by the crossbow bolt.  He could then describe it as an “accident” and then marry Anna to become king.
Don’t get me wrong—I’m happy he didn’t.  I have such a huge crush on Elsa that I, personally, can’t imagine anyone actually raising a crossbow against her with the intention of doing her harm.  I think I would have simply melted if she looked at me. But these guards (to their everlasting shame) did try to harm her; so why wouldn’t Hans have simply let it happen?”
He is referring to this post if you aren’t sure what he is talking about in the first sentence.
My thoughts on why Hans didn’t let the guard kill Elsa (supposedly)?
Let us review the facts:
  1. Hans is the youngest, as a result he will never inherit the throne
  2. He told Anna that he doesn’t love him
  3. He manipulates Anna throughout the whole movie until the end.
  4. He manipulates everyone in the movie. Even Elsa lets down her guard for a moment around him (during the castle scene- “don’t act like the monster they believe you to be”  she looks at him and is thrown off by this.)
  5. He comes off as:
    ~A Gentlemen
    ~you get the idea
  6. Hans is very aware of peoples perceptions-no one questions him when he tells the Princess is dead and that they had a private marriage. They all believe him and believe that he truly loved Anna.
  7. We all know the Duke (of Weseltown) to be a shady character
  8. His guards are also pretty shady
  9. People usually don’t like having their monarchs killed, in general people would rather solve things peacefully than through violence (usually).

Getting back to the question: Why Let Elsa Live?

Here is the thing, he wasn’t planning on letting her live. He wanted to make it look like an accident. He still wanted to look like the good guy.

If you remember, he looks up at the chandelier, runs to the guard and tries to stop the guard from shooting elsa. Well what if we look at it in a different way. He was trying to have the arrow hit the chandelier! Remember right after the ice chandelier is hit, it almost hits Elsa, but she just makes it out alive!

Just misses her

  • If she dies, Anna becomes Queen and since she is being manipulated by him, they will get married and he will become King. He will have the power and she will be in a bad relationship.
  • The guards look bad, for if they hadn’t tried to kill Elsa, this accident would never had happened. Also remember the guards were ordered by the Duke to kill her, they ran ahead of everyone in pursuit of her, and were seen attacking her. There is no way to convince those witnessing that the  Dukes guards “accidentally killed Elsa”, especially while the Crossbow is aimed directly at her with menacing intent.
  • Hans would look like a Hero/good guy for trying to save her and this will also help win brownie points with Anna, who will be in mourning (if he believes her to still be alive).
  • If Anna never returns, Hans could take over the kingdom without anyone giving him grief since he is seen as doing good and helping/caring for the citizens. He also tried to save the Queen! How could he be a bad guy? (rolling my eyes)

Elsa’s accidental death+ Hans tries to save her+ all his good actions toward citizens+ (Annas death or more in favor with Anna) = Hans is King.

With this having failed he has her taken back to the prison. And he has to come up with a Plan B.

This is when another opportunity comes up and he gobbles it up.

Hans learns quickly that Anna has been struck by Elsa’s ice powers and that if she isn’t healed by true love, she will die. He sees another opportunity to be King.

If Anna dies, that means Elsa has technically murdered her sister (even though it would have been accidental) as a result of this, she would have committed a crime. She can be sentenced to death.  It also helps that Hans has told everyone that Anna was killed by Elsa, and that before she died they exchanged wedding vows privately, making him the next in line once Elsa is dead.

Anna’s death+lie about marriage vows+ Elsa’s Trial & death= Kingdom for Hans.

That is the face of a killer, finally happy to achieve his goals.

That is the face of a killer, finally happy to achieve his goals.

It could be looked at that he was taken revenge on his love and no one would have blamed him (thankfully Anna ruined his plans).

I don’t think letting Elsa live was the objective, I think Hans objective was to become King with as little problems and opposition. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had plans before Elsa revealed her Ice & Snow powers.

My Thoughts on “Spoilers”

im gonna troll you so hard

I may tick people off when it comes to this, but I don’t really care. I am kind of irritated.

I know that when a new episode of my favorite TV Show, a new book to my favorite series, or a sequel to a movie I enjoyed has come out. I know there will be this crazy thing that will pop up on the internet called spoilers.

I also know that if I start getting into a series that has been around for a while there will be lots of fansites on the internet that could possibly spoil it for me. As a result I don’t go looking for it till I have caught up. I am okay with that.

And if a series is older than 10 years I shouldn’t have to post spoilers in the title. I shouldn’t have to post spoilers in the article at all.

But apparently on reddit you have to .

Even if the series is 16 years old….

You can click here to see for yourself.

what what

Really come on now.

When I am getting into a series and I know it is old; I don’t go looking online. If I do, I know I am doing it at my own risk. If I am just getting into a series that is brand new, if a new episode has come, out and I haven’t seen it yet; I will avoid those websites in the meantime until I have seen the episode. It is a lot easier to do than you think.

I have missed a lot concerning Once Upon A Time lately. Due to my facebook feed all I know is that the Wicked Witch is involved. That is it. I don’t know anything about it.

When I have missed new episodes from Doctor Who, Once Upon A Time, Sleep Hollow, Game of Thrones, etc. you know what I do? I do this amazing thing called don’t look and don’t search for it. I don’t go looking for things on tumblr, pinterest, etc. If something pops up while I’m on there I do this amazing thing where I ignore it. I don’t read it, I just click away from it.

I know crazy right.

crazy right

Now when I am talking among friends in person I have more discretion because well even if they cover their ears there is not much they can do about it. Instead I talk privately about with the friends who are in the know or I ask if that person cares if I spoil it for them.

Most of them don’t, a few do. It’s cool.

What happens if what happened on the internet happened in the real world, where people actually interact face to face.

I am in a bookstore or cafe talking about a new episode with friends. It is just a conversation between the two of us. All of a sudden someone comes up to me and says ‘you just spoiled that episode for me!’ You should have said spoilers!’ ‘I wasn’t talking to you though and you didn’t have to listen in’, I say. ‘Still though you can’t go around talking about it and spoiling for everyone,’ says whiny fan(girl/boy).

See how ridiculous that is?

In all honestly though I don’t know what is so hard about not looking for information related to your fandom. My father does it all the time. I do it all the time, and so does my mother. We are all Geeks. If they sees any article related to TV Shows and yes even movies that they are interested in, they will do this crazy thing where they ignores it and they don’t read and or watch youtube videos online, or look up anything related, unless they don’t care. Which sometimes they don’t.

I do the exact same thing. I don’t fanboy/fangirl rage at someone for spoiling something, especially since, I went looking at the topic in relation to said fandom in the first place. I can understand it may be a little more “difficult” when you are subscribed and or following that person. Usually the titles though are a pretty good giveaway of what they are talking about. I follow so many geek related sites and I have yet to have the entire episode of Game of Thrones spoiled for me. It has only happened once. Once!

Big example. I have’t seen the current season of Game of Thrones. I accidentally saw something about the purple wedding and I only know that…..

You have been warned

Are you sure you want to go further

Fine I am not responsible….

Honestly that shouldn’t be a surprise to:

  • those who have read the books
  • those who have watched the season so far
  • those who know that George R.R. Martin loves killing people more so than Moffat.
(Imagine if they did an episode together…)

OH the Horrors!

I am not against warning people about spoiler related things, but there is a limit. Here is what I will post spoilers on…

I will still post spoilers on things that are:

  • The episode just aired
  • New books in a series that just came out
  • Movie sequel just came out
  • you get the idea….

But I won’t post spoilers on:

  • Movies (especially if the movie is based on a book- sorry I am no sorry- that is not happening)
  • Movies that have been in existence for more than a year
  • Book series that have been out longer than a year
  • New Bestselling Books (have to be about a year old)
  • TV Shows that are over in general
  • TV Shows Season that are over (like once the 4th Season of Game of Thrones is over- all bets are off)
  • Games- this just won’t happen

That is my stance because frankly if I have to put a spoiler alert on every single thing I am posting, it will take way too much time. And that is a little overkill.

So be warned anytime you see anything fandom related on my page. You have been warned.

Check out this Awesome Lego Frozen Castle!

While browsing on tumblr and taking a break from studying I came across this post

elsa ice palace on tumblr

Screenshot of this post

Isn’t this awesome!

Well, apparently a mother came up with this because he daughter wanted a Frozen Lego palace. Once her son saw it, he loved it too.

I love it. I want it. Fortunately there is a website that can help make this possible. There is a lego website where you can submit your lego ideas. The are two catches though, you have to build it out of current lego materials and you have to get lots of support for it.

Well right now there isn’t that much support for this project, not enough for it to hit stores. I want this set so much and I want this to be available for all children everywhere.

If you love Frozen, Disney, and Legos, or even just one of those please go over to this website now and show you support. Tell your friends. Tell your family. Show it to your kids. I bet they will love it. Even if you don’t have kids right now (or ever), wouldn’t you want to get one for yourself? I know I do.

My Concerns Upon Seeing all the Maleficent Trailers

maleficentThe first time I heard news of the new Maleficent movie coming out, I was so excited. As soon as I heard Angelina Jolie was going to play the part of Maleficent, I groaned inward. I don’t think she is a bad actor, I just think she is overrated. I was also worried that they were going to “sex up” another badass female character. Either that or they were going to have us sympathize with her, can someone just be a villain just because they like being a villain.

When I saw the First Maleficent Teaser trailer I was really excited and nervous. When I first watched the teaser, I did get the sense that she was going to be a bad girl. Deceiving Aurora, an innocent girl. Those eyes of hers, also struck me.  I was taken aback by how striking they were and thinking ‘I want to have those contacts.’

The Second teaser trailer I was very excited to see the castle and the three fairies. If

In the latest release of the trailer one of my fears may have been founded. In the line they say You know the Tale. Now find out the Truth. As soon as I saw those words, I knew I just knew they were going to try to find a way to justify her actions. As I kept watching the movie a part of me was really frustrated, I just wanted her to be the villain. I was surprised by the fact that her Raven was in actually an individual that could turn into a raven. Than an answer that many disney fans have wondered may be answered, which made me happy. She was described by Disney originally as being a wicked fairy, so the fact that I saw with wings did have me all excited. I wsn’t sure, but was that the raven turning into the dragon? I hope not, I hope that is just a trick of the camera because I want maleficent to turn into the dragon! Maleficeint’s smile though.

Questions left over from all the trailers:

  • The Three Good Fairies are very tiny. Is that their permanent size or can they change their height? (I know in the animation they could change their height, but this is a different version of the movie).
  • If they can change their height does that mean Maleficent can as well? If we are too assume that she is too a fairy.
  • If Maleficent can’t change her size, why not?
  • Who cut off her wings? Was it the King? If so, why?

  • Maleficents wings were cut off by the King.
  • The King had plans to expand his land, disregarding the nature and the forest life that exists.
  • Maleficeint being a fairy is a defender of that life.
  • She doesn’t like the three faires because she feels they have turned their back on what they were originally supposed to do, protect life and nature.
  • The battle we see was a man veruses nature battle. Bringing in the concept of the harmful affects that humanity can have on the environment.
  • Maleficent sees that the King will use his daughter to expand his land and as a result harm more life.
  • Maleficent decides to put the daughter to sleep to prevent that from happening.
  • Maleficent will probably explain her side of the story to Aurora (she may or may not tell her about the fact that ‘oh I cursed you as a child, but I did it for the right reasons. No hard feelings?’ )
  • Aurora won’t be happy with Maleficent with what she has done (whether it be the fighting, the creepy stalking, or the whole deal with the curse).
  • Maleficent wants to defeat the king once and for all.

What are your thoughts on the Maleficent movie? Let me know in the comments below!
