50 Movies To See on Valentine’s Day (Not 50 Shades of Grey)

I know my boyfriend is very thankful that I have no desire (okay that isn’t true, I have a smidgen of desire to see the movie, I wouldn’t want to pay money on the movie though) to see 50 Shades of Grey that is coming out Valentine’s Day.

I have come up with a list of movies that is currently playing or are coming to theaters this Valentine’s Day weekend in theatre (depending on your location and availability of course):

  1.  Jupiter Ascending
  2. Seventh Son
  3. Old Fashioned
  4. Kinsman: The Secret Service
  5. The Last Five Years
  6. The Spongebob Movie
  7. Project Almanac
  8. The Loft
  9. Boy Next Door
  10. Black Sea
  11. Love, Rosie
  12. Somewhere Only We Know
  13. What We Do in the Shadows
  14. American Sniper
  15. Strange Magic
  16. Blackhat
  17. Paddington

  32. The Hobbit: Desolation of Smuag
  33. A Most Violent Year
  34. Inherent Vice
  35. The Theory of Everything
  36. Interstellar

  45. Top Five
  46. Penguins of Madagascar
  47. The Rewrite
  48. Annie
  49. Birdman
  50. Gone Girl

Although #8 & #9 are creepy, at least it doesn’t pretend to be a romance like 50 Shades of Grey. Now I know some on the list  have been out for a while, there are still quite a few movie theaters showing these movies. It all depends on what theater you go to. I am using the movies that are available in East Tennessee up till Valentine’s Day.

What movie would you rather see on Valentine’s Day than 50 Shades of Grey?Let me know in the comments below!

Lists about 50 Shades of Grey

It is February and for some many are dreading Valentine’s Day. For me, I am dreading the release (and the madness to follow) of 50 Shades of Grey.

On the way home from classes, my boyfriend and I were talking about the upcoming movie and how we hope it will flop (sadly the reality is, many people will go to see it because it is popular). Somehow we began coming up with ideas of what would be more stimulating than reading the series or watching it. Soon it grew and now we have so many lists ideas that it I will probably be posting different lists regarding this throughout the month.

The List will be updated through the month:

5 Halloween Movies I’ll Be Watching This Year

Halloween is almost upon us! I am so excited and slightly stressed, for I haven’t shopped for my costume yet.

Beaker

I should be okay though. Hopefully ,I can gather something from the thrift store to make my costume. My boyfriends costume is so much easier, sigh. I won’t tell you what my costume will be, but look here to see which characters I am thinking of dressing up as for Halloween.

To get in the Halloween spirit and mood these are the movies I will be watching.

1.) Sleepy Hollow & The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

I know these are two different movies, so I kind of cheated, but they are based off the same story by Washington Irving.

The first one I watched every Halloween for the longest time on VHS when I was a kid. I remember being scared every time by the Horseman. Nothing can beat the original, I recommend watching this one first.

Now my parents bought the Tim Burton movie quite a few years ago and  when I saw it my first thought was “Oh Great another Johnny Depp/Tim Burton movie. Actually it is really good and I really enjoy it.

Both are good for the Halloween season and a must watch to get into the spirit.

2.) The Nightmare Before Christmas

Yes, another Tim Burton movie. This is one of the few movies one can watch both around Christmas time and Halloween, so why not watch it. Also, I love Jack’s Lament from the movie as well. So haunting and beautiful.

3.) Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island

One of my favorite Scooby-Doo movies. I watched this a ton when I was little and this to scared me. I loved the idea that the Zombies were…well I won’t give it away for those that haven’t seen it. I will tell you though, the Island is cursed. Go watch it, I love it!

4.) Hocus Pocus

For as long as my boyfriend and I have been dating we had been trying to find this movie on DVD in stores, whether used or new. It was impossible, we almost broke down to order it online, when my boyfriend found it by chance at McKay’s! We have already watched this movie about 15 times (at least) since October began.

5.) The Rocky Horror Picture Show

This movie freaked me out a little when I was younger, it is still slightly scary (I scare easily) but for me you can’t get in the mood without watching Rocky Horror. Every year I watch it and every year I’m still left confused, but amused by it.

Do you watch any of these movies around Halloween? What Halloween movies do you watch that is not on this list?

My Thoughts on “Spoilers”

im gonna troll you so hard

I may tick people off when it comes to this, but I don’t really care. I am kind of irritated.

I know that when a new episode of my favorite TV Show, a new book to my favorite series, or a sequel to a movie I enjoyed has come out. I know there will be this crazy thing that will pop up on the internet called spoilers.

I also know that if I start getting into a series that has been around for a while there will be lots of fansites on the internet that could possibly spoil it for me. As a result I don’t go looking for it till I have caught up. I am okay with that.

And if a series is older than 10 years I shouldn’t have to post spoilers in the title. I shouldn’t have to post spoilers in the article at all.

But apparently on reddit you have to .

Even if the series is 16 years old….

You can click here to see for yourself.

what what

Really come on now.

When I am getting into a series and I know it is old; I don’t go looking online. If I do, I know I am doing it at my own risk. If I am just getting into a series that is brand new, if a new episode has come, out and I haven’t seen it yet; I will avoid those websites in the meantime until I have seen the episode. It is a lot easier to do than you think.

I have missed a lot concerning Once Upon A Time lately. Due to my facebook feed all I know is that the Wicked Witch is involved. That is it. I don’t know anything about it.

When I have missed new episodes from Doctor Who, Once Upon A Time, Sleep Hollow, Game of Thrones, etc. you know what I do? I do this amazing thing called don’t look and don’t search for it. I don’t go looking for things on tumblr, pinterest, etc. If something pops up while I’m on there I do this amazing thing where I ignore it. I don’t read it, I just click away from it.

I know crazy right.

Now when I am talking among friends in person I have more discretion because well even if they cover their ears there is not much they can do about it. Instead I talk privately about with the friends who are in the know or I ask if that person cares if I spoil it for them.

Most of them don’t, a few do. It’s cool.

What happens if what happened on the internet happened in the real world, where people actually interact face to face.

I am in a bookstore or cafe talking about a new episode with friends. It is just a conversation between the two of us. All of a sudden someone comes up to me and says ‘you just spoiled that episode for me!’ You should have said spoilers!’ ‘I wasn’t talking to you though and you didn’t have to listen in’, I say. ‘Still though you can’t go around talking about it and spoiling for everyone,’ says whiny fan(girl/boy).

See how ridiculous that is?

In all honestly though I don’t know what is so hard about not looking for information related to your fandom. My father does it all the time. I do it all the time, and so does my mother. We are all Geeks. If they sees any article related to TV Shows and yes even movies that they are interested in, they will do this crazy thing where they ignores it and they don’t read and or watch youtube videos online, or look up anything related, unless they don’t care. Which sometimes they don’t.

I do the exact same thing. I don’t fanboy/fangirl rage at someone for spoiling something, especially since, I went looking at the topic in relation to said fandom in the first place. I can understand it may be a little more “difficult” when you are subscribed and or following that person. Usually the titles though are a pretty good giveaway of what they are talking about. I follow so many geek related sites and I have yet to have the entire episode of Game of Thrones spoiled for me. It has only happened once. Once!

Big example. I have’t seen the current season of Game of Thrones. I accidentally saw something about the purple wedding and I only know that…..

SPOILER ALERT

.

You have been warned

.

Are you sure you want to go further

.

.

Fine I am not responsible….

.

.

.

SOMEONE DIES

Honestly that shouldn’t be a surprise to:

  • those who have read the books
  • those who have watched the season so far
  • those who know that George R.R. Martin loves killing people more so than Moffat.
(Imagine if they did an episode together…)

OH the Horrors!

I am not against warning people about spoiler related things, but there is a limit. Here is what I will post spoilers on…

I will still post spoilers on things that are:

  • The episode just aired
  • New books in a series that just came out
  • Movie sequel just came out
  • you get the idea….

But I won’t post spoilers on:

  • Movies (especially if the movie is based on a book- sorry I am no sorry- that is not happening)
  • Movies that have been in existence for more than a year
  • Book series that have been out longer than a year
  • New Bestselling Books (have to be about a year old)
  • TV Shows that are over in general
  • TV Shows Season that are over (like once the 4th Season of Game of Thrones is over- all bets are off)
  • Games- this just won’t happen

That is my stance because frankly if I have to put a spoiler alert on every single thing I am posting, it will take way too much time. And that is a little overkill.

So be warned anytime you see anything fandom related on my page. You have been warned.

Why I Think Mary Poppins is Julie Andrews Greatest Film

mary_poppins_1964_9

You read that right. I believe that Mary Poppins is Julie Andrews greatest film. Not The sound of  Music, not Victor Victoria. Mary Poppins.

I know what you are already thinking. Are you crazy? But the music in The Sound of Music is so much better, story is so much better, etc.

Here is The Main Reason Behind it.

I have grown up watching many Julie Andrews movies. If you had asked me when I was younger to list all of the Julie Andrews movies I had seen and heard of I would have listed all but Mary Poppins. You might be confused and even argue ‘yeah that is why it is not her greatest movie.’

Hold on, I’m not finished yet.

1075008-mary_poppins1

An actor/actress (whatever term you want to use) purpose is to tell a story and portray a character that is not their own. Everytime I have watched Mary Poppins I don’t see Julie Andrews playing Mary Poppins. I see Mary Poppins and I always have to remind myself that Mary Poppins just happens to be played by Julie Andrews. I don’t think of the actor/actress first. I’m thinking of the character. I can’t tell you a movie that makes me think of the character  of the story first and not the actor.

Mary_Poppins5

To me she has accomplished what many in the Hollywood business wish they could. Become another character so well that I forget that is only an actor and not a real human being. I have watched so many of her movies and so many movies in general (I am very behind on my movie review posts and my book review posts too, that’s another story) that I can safely say that I had never seen an actor do that before (and I love watching old movies, silent films, etc.).

Mary-Poppins-mv01

If there are other movies where you think an actor/actress has accomplished this, let me know in the comments below. I love feedback.

My 3 favorite Julie Andrews Movies

51581644EA015_fgi

I love Julie Andrews. She is talented, beautiful, smart, and classy.  She is one of my favorite actresses in Hollywood today. I remember growing up with her movies. Out of all of her movies that I have seen these are my 3 favorite Julie Andrews movies.

These are my top 3 Favorite and yes they are in numerical order with #1 being my absolute favorite.

3.)Victor Victoria

victor

This movie is about Victoria, a singer who is down on her luck that is soon discovered by Toddy who helps her pull off something crazy. A woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman.

I love this movie. The lyrics are excellent, the singing is excellent, and even though there are some serious themes in this movie, there is still a lot of humor in it. Julie Andrews does a fantastic job as always and I just love hearing her voice.

2.)The Sound of Music

Sound_of_music

The Sound of Music has to make this list. With her beautiful singing, great acting, and all that energy, this is simply a classic. I love the story line and I never tire of watching this great movie.

1.) Mary Poppins

mary poppins

For those that don’t know Mary Poppins, who is practically perfect in every way comes to the house of the Banks family to not only watch after the children, but to help bring the family together. There is music, dancing, and animated penguins. Let us not forget that there is no romance between Mary and another male character, there may be hint of flirtation, but she goes her own way. Very forward thinking during for movies in general, especially Disney.

Although P.L. Travers may not have been the biggest fan of Walt Disneys Mary Poppins, I am. When I was younger I liked it, but it wasn’t my favorite disney movie (it was one of my brother favorites though) but when I watched it starting out in college I fell in love with it. It is not my go to movie, but as a Julie Andrews movie I do believe this is the best. That is why it is my #1 favorite.

I could go into this for hours honestly, but since the point of this post is to just list my favorite Julie Andrews movies and not why I think this is the best one. Click here to read why this is my favorite Julie Andrews movie and why I think it is her best movie.
