We Need a New Definition for Politics

politicsOn my first day of Political Science we learned the definition of politics.

According to my textbook, Keeping the Republic, this is the definition of Politics-

“Who gets what, when, and how; a process of determining how power and resources are distributed in a society without recourse to violence.”

This is the definition according to my professor-

“Ongoing struggle to obtain and maintain control over the authoritative allocation of resources.”

And according to Wikipedia-

is the practice and theory of influencing other people on a civic or individual level. More narrowly, it refers to achieving and exercising positions of governance- organized control over a human community, particularly a state.

These are just some of the many definitions of politics that exist. Frankly I don’t like any of them.

The reason why I don’t like any of the definitions because it is all about the individual or a group of individuals accumulating power in order to have control or influence over the community.

I think we need a new definition.

No matter what party you are a part of, I think we can all agree that politicians seem to be more and more self serving. They seem to ignore what the people desire, they take advantage of their position, and they just don’t care. I know not every single politician is like this, but a lot of them seem to be like this, sadly.

What these politicians seem to forget is that they are public servants. They serve the public, the people.

A public servant is a government official or employee. As a servant of the public, you are there to serve the people and do their will. You are there to listen to them A politician is a person who is professionally involved in politics, esp. as a holder of or a candidate for an elected office. I think more politicians  need to act more like a public servant instead of an individual there to serve their own needs and their own interests.

To be honest, I don’t know what the defintion should be, but I know what it should include.

It should mean working for the people.

It should mean being honest.

It should mean being compassionate.

It should mean working together.

It should mean being selfless.

It should be extremely limited (example, you should only be allowed in office for so many years, after you have served for so many terms, you are done)

It should be for those that care about this country.

It should be for those that want to serve others.

And…

It shouldn’t be self serving.

It shouldn’t be a game.

It shouldn’t be for the power hungry.

It shouldn’t be oppressive.

It shouldn’t be the way it is now.

I don’t know what the definition should be, but we need a new one. Right now the one we have isn’t working out for us.
